SCRATCH ART ROCKS · PEDRES GRATADES

Fàcil i senzill.

It’s possible that you, who are reading this lines, at some moment of your lifetime, have left a message on the glass of a dirty windshield with your finger. It’s maybe one of the most primary (and explored) forms of urban expression. What’s most important is to create something funny (or beautiful) starting from a really simple gesture like swiping a finger and cleaning thus a dusty or misted glass… or scratching a dirty surface with something sharp.

This fact leads me to one of the techniques that we’ve been exploring lately: scratched wax. Scratch art technique consists on covering a surface with wax (habitually using colored crayons) and later, scratch this wax with a sharpened tool, with the purpose of allowing the original layer that's beneath to show. It turned out to be a great way to reuse those stones we didn’t liberate because we made a mistake on the drawing while we created them, or because we didn't liked the result or it was not what we expected.

First of all, we drew some motifs on the stones with permanent markers. Then, we heated them in the oven for five minutes, and while they were still hot, we melted crayons on the surface. When the wax hardened, we proceeded to scratch it with a toothpick. With the aim of making the result more durable, we sprayed a fixative on them. Easy and simple.

This stones are delicate and ephemeral… if you create or find one, you must protect it against bumps and keep it away from direct sunlight exposition or extremely warm places.

Happy scratching, #stonepainters!

  1. Ens hi apuntem a provar-ho!
